Bauerfeind RhizoLoc is a medical orthosis that stabilizes the thumb's metacarpophalangeal and carpometacarpal joints. According to the instructions for use, it is used for irritation after surgery or injury, injuries to the collateral ligaments - for example, skier's thumb - mild thumb-base osteoarthritis, as well as sprains and contusions.
According to Bauerfeind, the orthosis stabilizes the thumb, relieves pain, and promotes recovery.
How the orthosis works
RhizoLoc splints the thumb at the carpometacarpal and metacarpophalangeal joints with an individually adjustable aluminum frame, allowing the affected collateral ligaments to recover. A special Velcro flap allows the range of motion to be adjusted to be firm or loose, depending on the treatment requirements.
Because the orthosis is easy to put on and take off, exercises can begin early, allowing the thumb to quickly regain its mobility.
Materials and comfort
The breathable material has integrated pores that allow air to reach the skin, so the wrist and thumb do not become sweaty or itchy. The Velcro closure allows the orthosis to be put on and taken off with the other hand.
Composition according to the manufacturer: polyurethane (PUR), polyamide (PA), aluminum (Al), polyether, polyester (PES), and polyoxymethylene (POM).
Fit and size selection
RhizoLoc is available in two sizes, in separate models for the right and left hand, in the color Titan. Choose the size according to the circumference of the wrist and thumb:
- Size 1: wrist 12.5–16 cm, thumb 5–7 cm
- Size 2: wrist 16–20 cm, thumb 6.5–9 cm

Use and care
According to the instructions for use, the initial fitting and explanation of how the orthosis works may only be carried out by qualified personnel; the aluminum splint is preformed but must be individually adjusted. Then: open the two hook-and-loop straps without pulling them out, place the orthosis on the thumb, slide the hand through the wrist strap and the thumb through the thumb strap, fasten the wrist strap and then the thumb strap. Stabilization of the thumb's metacarpophalangeal joint is adjusted using the thumb loop in consultation with a doctor.
If possible, remove the hook-and-loop straps or fasten them securely. Hand-wash the orthosis at 30 °C with mild detergent and let it air-dry – do not use a tumble dryer or expose it to direct heat.
