Bauerfeind MalleoTrain S Open Heel is a medical support brace for stabilising the ankle and improving contact with the ground thanks to its open heel section. According to Bauerfeind, it is used for weakened ligaments, to help prevent the foot from rolling outward and for minor sprains.
After a sprain or in cases of persistently weak ligaments, the muscles need to learn to avoid incorrect movements as quickly as possible. According to Bauerfeind, walking barefoot is a good form of treatment because it trains sensation in the skin and muscles - and with an open heel, you can feel the ground while the ankle receives support. bauerfeind.se mentions barefoot sports such as gymnastics, dance and martial arts.
How the support works
The elastic, close-fitting Train knit provides alternating compression massage with every movement. According to Bauerfeind, this relieves pain, reduces swelling, eases tension, stimulates circulation and improves sensorimotor function.
A system of bands with varying elasticity provides additional stability. The band is wrapped around the ankle in a figure eight, providing mechanical stabilisation and counteracting supination in the same way as a functional tape dressing. According to bauerfeind.se, it provides better stabilisation than a tape dressing and is gentler on the skin.
Materials and comfort
The Train knit is anatomically shaped and breathable. A special high-low structure increases contact with the skin so that the support stays securely in place, the edges have lower compression to prevent them from constricting, and there is a soft comfort zone over the instep. The support has no pads and fits closely enough to be worn even with narrow, lightweight shoes.
Material composition according to the manufacturer: polyamide (PA), elastane (EL), polyurethane (PUR) and polyester (PES).
Fit and size selection
MalleoTrain S Open Heel is available in sizes 1-5, in separate models for the right and left foot, in Titan. Choose the size according to the ankle circumference using the size guide:
- Size 1: 17-19 cm
- Size 2: 19-21 cm
- Size 3: 21-23 cm
- Size 4: 23–25 cm
- Size 5: 25–27 cm

Use and care
Fold up the upper part of the support far enough to reach the heel, pull the support over the foot to the heel, fold it back and pull it up until the heel section is positioned correctly. The strap starts on the inside of the foot. Keep the lower leg at a right angle to the foot: guide the strap under the sole to the outside of the foot, place it diagonally backward over the instep around the ankle and diagonally forward to the inside of the foot, pull it under the sole to the outside and over the instep, and fasten the end of the strap to the underlying strap. Pulling the strap allows you to adjust the stabilization to a comfortable level.
Close all hook-and-loop fasteners before washing. Use mild detergent and a laundry bag, follow the washing instructions on the sewn-in label, and do not expose the support to direct heat or cold. Regular care preserves its effectiveness.
